UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

BRIEF HISTORY

  Department of Education was founded in August, 1987. We currently have about two thousand graduates and most of them contribute in the educational field. In 2003, we established the daytime master’s program; in 2006, we offered a master’s degree in Innovation and Management in Education Industry for students with a full time job; moreover, we expanded our department division in the city of Kinmen. This division is offering a master’s degree in educational administration for local students. The department was authorized to change its name to Department of Education in 2009 and the name of our graduate school adjusted to Master’s Program in Innovation and Evaluation in Education. We have approximately 300 students including undergraduate students in four classes of four academic years and graduate students.

CHARACTERISTICS OF DEVELOPMENT (or OBJECTIVES)

Our department emphasized on preparing students to be outstanding primary school teachers, and because of this, we gradually arrange students to teach in primary schools in order to practice from their first academic year to the fourth. Besides, through arrangement of curricula, we will develop students’ research, educational innovation, educational evaluation, and problem solving abilities. Because we feel it is very important to open up students’ international vision, our program includes more second language related courses and holds annual practicum activities abroad and also provides oversea volunteer opportunities, which allow students to use in other languages for their career. The characteristics of our department are summarized as below:

I. Develop students’ skills in career planning, excellence in teaching, educational policy, academic research, and cultural promotion.

II. Increase students’ competitiveness in their research and career through a diversified, systematic, and field studies preparation process.

III.Enthusiastically develop students’ international vision, hold oversea practicum activities, and provide oversea exchange student programs with foreign sister universities.

IV.Enhance students’ educational compassion: encourage students to volunteer in educational services for the poor community both in countryside and overseas during their summer and winter vacations.

V.Encourage students to get internship in Ministry of Education or some other related institutions to broaden their practical experience in education.

TEACHING GOALS

Through solid course schedules and teaching, we want to achieve the following teaching goals:

I. Prepare students to have an educational profession blended with theory and practice.

II. Develop students’ critical thinking and creative energy.

III. Prepare students to have academic research and problem solving abilities.

  IV. Prepare students to have educational passion and profession to participate in educational related industries.

COURSE RATIONALE

  The department not only expects students to be enthusiastic about education and characteristics of primary teachers’ course schedule- by classes, but also sets up some courses for child learning industry, children’s literature editing, computer and multimedia, and etc. to meet the needs of educational flow and society activities. Moreover, we focus on broadening students’ international vision, strengthening their competiveness, offering some courses about the cross-national comparison of curriculum, comparative education and second languages, such as Japanese, Korean, German, and etc..

COURSE STRUCTURE

    I.  Our course structure consists of General Courses (28 credit hours), Areas of Specializations (80 credit hours), and Elective Courses (20 credit hours). Areas of Specializations are divided into Education Fundamental Theory and Research Methods, Administration and Policies, Curriculum and Instruction, Field Instruction and Teaching Materials & Methods. Students should select their elective courses based on their interests, career orientations and needs.

    II.  Students can also take their primary education program and select different optional courses based on their career and interest. For those who wish to take secondary education, childhood education and special education program, students are required to pass the qualification evaluation from our Center for Teacher Education and Careers Service  prior to be admitted to the those programs.

    III.  Degree requirements:

a. 28 credit hours for General Courses

b. 80 credit hours for Areas of Specialization

c. 20 credit hours for Elective Courses

d. 40 credit hours for Primary Education Program (Please note that 20 credit hours from this field can be deducted from the requirements of Areas of Specialization)

 GRADUATION REQUIREMENT

      Undergraduate students will need a minimum of 128 credit hours to graduate. Students majoring in Primary Education Program require at least 148 credit hours for graduation.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

    To respond to raise the quality of educators for our diversified positions in education and open up our vision to academic research fields, the department visualizes its future as described below:

I. Adjust course structure, broaden learning capacity, diversify students’ capability, fully develop students’ potential and raise students’ learning productivity and competitiveness.

II. Improve teaching quality, increase learning effectiveness, develop innovative research abilities, and prepare primary school teachers to participate in educational reforms.

III.Strengthen the administration team, collaborate with faculties’ and students’ intellectual ability, propose contemporary developing plan and encourage healthy development for our department.

IV.Demonstrate our educational research results, offer continuing education opportunities for educational professions who wish to learn more, and promote our academic position in education.

    Our graduates can find their career positions as primary school teachers after passing the teacher certification exam; employees in book publishers or after-school learning institutions to develop educational products, government employees after completing their national official exams, educational evaluators, educational broadcast program developers or other professionals in related industries, or researchers either in foreign or domestic educational institutions

MASTER’S DEGREE IN EDUCATIONAL INNOVATION AND ASSESSMENT

BRIEF HISTORY

Our department was founded in August, 1987 and began our Master’s program in Primary School Education, which has a core value of characteristics in broad-minded, professional, and analytical to build our future perspectives.

In 2006, we wanted to continue our outstanding reputation in the primary education field so we expanded our department to another master’s program-- Innovation and Management in Education Industry (mostly nighttime courses). Also, in the same year, to meet the shortage of educators with a master’s degree in Kinmen, we offered the master’s program in educational policy for local educators to continue their career development.  

In 2009, we changed the names for both the daytime and nighttime master’s program-- Innovation and Evaluation in Education and expect such change could raise our quality in the future. In our long historical inheritance, we want to maintain our outstanding educational culture, to collaborate education with related education industries, to broaden students’ international vision, to develop proper educational professions, to meet the needs of the current job market, and to increase our students’ competitiveness in the job market.

DEVELOPING CHARACTERISTICS

Our master’s degree program is the first department to combine educational innovation and evaluation. In such a combination, we can achieve our main missions in implementing the values of innovation and evaluation effectively in our education. The developing characteristics for our program are summarized below:

 I.  Combine educational innovation and evaluation that would innovate evaluation and assess innovation.

 II.  Foresee the age changes and offer an innovative learning environment.

 III.Take educational innovation to develop diversity and choose outstanding by assessment.

 IV. Use creativeness to produce a personal, organizational, and social innovation.

  V. Improve personal, organizational, and social development through evaluation.

TEACHING GOALS

We expect to achieve the following four teaching goals through a rich and solid course and teaching:

  I.  Develop creative thinking, analytical thinking and problem solving in education.

 II. Practice assessable theory and methods and evaluate the value of educational practice.

 III. Prepare the proposals to create and develop education industry.            

IV. Proceed research in special topic in educational innovation and evaluation...

COURSE CHARACTERISTICS

 Our course mission is to connect the relationship between industry and academia, collaborate many renowned professions in education industry with our faculty, use educational resources from various fields, provide learning opportunities, and to cope with case analysis, so that educators could fully understand fundamental knowledge in education, innovation and evaluation. In such a way, our education industry can be more developed and be competitive.

  The idea of our course schedule is to emphasize the theoretical basis and the practical issues in educational innovation and evaluation. Students will have objective and subjective thinking for their foundation in research and practice.

COURSE STRUCTURE

I. Our course structure consists of 4 categories by their learning contents: Research Method, Core, Educational Innovation and Educational Evaluation.

II. Credit-hour requirements: a total of 32 credit hours for the completion of a master’s degree

b. Elective Courses: 18 credit hours

         iMaster’s Degree In Educational Innovation And Evaluation

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

  The time limit to our master’s program is 2 to 4 years. Graduate students should complete their study for a minimum of 32 credit hours and their master’s degree thesis. Before applying for graduation, candidates need to attend their academic activities and publish their thesis, according to our diplomatic requirements (for details, please review our graduate student handbook).

FUTURE CAREER

  Graduates could participate in developing instructional materials, innovating teaching equipments, designing and producing educational broadcast program, become government employees or educational evaluators, studying educational courses to obtain the teachers’ qualification and teaching in school, and preceding a deeper researching career in domestic and foreign owned institutions.
