TEACHING GOALS AND CHARACTERISTICS

The idea for our department is to prepare a special educational profession to provide the full professional services for people with a disability. Our department faculties and included various talented professions, ranging from Curriculum Theory, Educational Psychology, Educational Administration, Psychology Counseling and Neuro-Psychology, will lead students to a deeper research and analysis of issues and debates in special education. Our undergraduate program provides the basis for special educational professions. Our master’s degree programs in Special Education and Early Rehabilitation strengths the special educational research ability. Not only so, the disciplinary prepares our master’s degree candidates to be an educational profession, who has the knowledge of theoretical research and teaching curriculum to serve in the preschool institutions, elementary school, junior high school, other educational levels of school, and early rehabilitation related institutions.

iCharacteristics of Our Department

I. Our department plays a role and position in the development and motivation of special educational field. We began our teachers training program for children with intelligent disability in Taiwan since 1960. The graduates from this training program work as various special education professions in many elementary schools and kindergarten and that is our honorable history and teaching experience.

II. We have a strong faculty team, coming from experienced backgrounds. Since we established our department in 1991, we continued our teaching experience and our strong faculty team to prepare our graduates to be a special educational teacher who has solid teaching and assisting experience and to be excellent in their profession.

III. To meet the current flows of the special education technology, we feel the need to develop an advanced studying path for our field related professions. Due to the world inclusive education development in the recent years, it is a high demand for professions in the field of education and early rehabilitation for students with physical and intelligent disability to enhance themselves for newer technology. Besides our undergraduate program, department of special education also offers master’s degrees in special education and early rehabilitation for special education teachers, administrators, and related field professions to have the opportunity to continue their career development. Our master’s degree program to professions working in special education, such as special education teachers, teachers in general, career therapists, physical therapists, or nurse, not only makes them more competitive to their colleagues but also extends their teamwork spirit.

IV. Our department has the ambition to exceed the limit of traditional teaching methods and to collaborate with issues arisen from our digitalized age; for examples, we opened courses with Age Digital Learning Cooperation and started offering distant learning courses. In such way, the department could display a positive image to meet the need of our current age.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

I. Undergraduate Studies

     Within 4 academic years, Students need to complete a total of 128 credit hours, including 28 credit hours from general courses, 80 credit hours from areas of specializations, and 20 credit hours from optional courses. Beside this requirement, students can select courses in higher levels of studies or over other areas of their own major. Also, based on students’ interest and career intendancy, students are allowed to get a second major and to develop their talents.

II. Graduate Studies: Master Degrees in special education and early intervention service

      In cooperation with the department’s goals, direction and focus, our master’s degree program takes special education as the core, splitting the area studies into research methods (requiring a minimum of 6 credit hours), special education capacity (requiring at least 9 credit hours), fundamental theory, research on the professional issues in every section, advanced seminar on special education and others (requiring at least 3 credit hours for each selected field).

      Master’s degree in Early Rehabilitation takes related courses, consisting with those areas: research methods (requiring a minimum of 3 credit hours), early intervention capacity (requiring a minimum of 6 credit hours), theoretical foundations (requiring a minimum of 6 credit hours), practicum (requiring a minimum of 9 credit hours), advanced seminar (requiring a minimum of 6 credit hours), and others (requiring at least 3 credit hours).

     Master’s degree candidates need to study at least 2 years and complete a minimum of 32 credit hours. According to our Entry Examination’s Guideline for Master’s and Ph. D. Degree Candidates, students must complete their thesis and dissertations to graduate. Students who do not have fundamental statistics course before admitted to the department will take related course from undergraduate school.
