BRIEF HISTORY

In July 1st, 1987, after our school was reformed into a Teacher’s College, we began our Graduate School of Mathematics’ program. In 1998, we separated from the Teacher’s college, became independent and changed our name to “Graduate School of Mathematics and Science Education”. Our mission is to prepare students with the skills of mathematic discipline, mathematic teaching methodology and information technology practicum and to expect students to be excellent educators with devoting attitudes, intelligence and strength in mathematics and information. In 2004, department of mathematics education have to adjust to the Department of Mathematics and Information education with two divisions accepting applicants: Mathematics Education and Information Education. Students in the Mathematics Education division will major in mathematics and education and students in Information Education division will major in mathematics and information education. The job markets for our graduates are in elementary schools, after school institutions, science related industries, publishing industries, digital equipment design, and private training institutes. Students can also continue to pursue higher education such as mathematics, statistics, information, information education, and digital learning.

Currently our faculty consists of 5 professors,2 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, 1 lecturer and 2 teaching assistants, including 10 PhDs and 1 master, specializing in Mathematics Theory, Mathematics Application, Mathematics Education, Information Education and Information Science.

EDUCATIONAL GOALS

Our educational goals are described as follow:

I. To develop the students’ professional abilities in logical reasoning, analytical thinking and problem solving.

II. To cultivate professionals in mathematics, informational teaching and curriculum planning.

III. To prepare the students to be professionals with ethical values, professional skills and positive aggression.

IV. To educate students to be mathematics and information system researchers in both theory and practice.

CHARACTERISTICS

Our department is the cradle of training elementary school teachers in math and information subjects. Our department is divided into two groups, mathematics and information. Our course design has taken the students’ interests and career orientation into consideration so that students can continue with higher education, and can choose any mathematical or information educational related positions in those industries.

We have faculty members from professionals in mathematics, mathematics education, and information education. Graduates shall have the basic skills of mathematic thinking, logical reasoning and problem solving; besides learning the mathematics profession, information and education. Our department is equipped with thousands of mathematic education related books and equipments, teaching materials and research result records as our instrumental resources. Moreover, mathematics summer camp continue our traditional heritage to be another characteristics of ours that offer students at our department to explore their creativity during summer vocation and to have teaching opportunities.

GRADUATATION REQUIREMENTS

I. Undergraduate

Undergraduate students must complete 28 general courses credit hours and 100 major courses credit hours, which include 58 credit hours in mathematics and 22 credit hours in electives for Mathematics Program; as for the Information Education Program, students are required to take 59 major courses credit hours and 21 credit hours in electives to receive their bachelor’s degree. 10 credit hours within the 21 credit hours in electives can be selective courses in higher levels. In addition, 20 credit hours are allowed for students who wish to take courses offered by other universities, other departments or other programs (general courses excluded). Overall, the completion of a minimum of 128 credit hours allows the students to receive their bachelor’s degree.

II. Graduate / Daytime Program

To enhance the students’ discipline in mathematic education, students must take at least 6 credit hours in core courses; and to strengthen graduate school students’ mathematics and information capacity, each candidate will need to take at least 8 credit hours in the field. To increase the candidates’ researching ability, students need to complete courses related to all research methodology for a minimum of 4 credit hours. Finally, to organize and understand each candidate’s research orientation, students must take Master Seminar I and II for 2 credit hours. All candidates must complete 32 credit hours for their master’s degree.

III. Graduate / Master’s Degree in Teaching

Candidates from the teaching program must take 8 credit hours of required courses and 24 elective credit hours. 6 credit hours of total required hours could be rewarded from those courses offered within our department, from other departments or other universities. Students from this program need to finish 32 credit hours of studying and their thesis to graduate.
